Rosemary(Rosemarinus officinalis) :
The essential oils of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) were analysed by means of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and assayed for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Antimicrobial activity was tested against 13 bacterial strains and 6 fungi, including Candida albicans and 5 dermatomycetes
The most important antibacterial activity of both essential oils was expressed on Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi,S. enteritidis, and Shigella sonei. A significant rate of antifungal activity, especially of essential oil of rosemary, was also exhibited
Rosemary is a known antimicrobial agent. The powdered leaves are used as an effective natural flea and tick repellent. Rosemary oil possesses marked antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Activity against certain bacteria including Staphylcoccus aureus , S. albus , Vibrio cholerae , Escherichia coli , and Corynebacteria has been observed.
Rosemary oil was found to be most active against “meat spoiling” gram-negative (eg, Pseudomonas ) and gram-positive (eg, Lactobacillus ) bacteria in 1 report. The effect of rosemary on Candida albicans has been described. Another report discusses growth inhibition of Aspergillus parasiticus by rosemary oil. However, a report on the use of rosemary to treat head lice found it to be ineffective.
Lemon(Citrus limon):
The study shows that the peel of lemon is not only an astringent but also is a good antimicrobial agent. This is an important finding as certain skin flora like Pseudomonas and Micrococcus can grow in presence of sebum, especially when it is secreted in excess (in certain person), and cause purulent skin infections. Some time it can serve as a predisposing factor for other types of skin
infections like acne. Simple use of lemon juice can prevent such types of infections and could help in keeping a good and healthy skin.
The result of antimicrobial susceptibility assay showed promising evidence for the antimicrobial effects of lemon fruit peels, seeds and juice against bacterial (S. aureus , P. aeruginosa ,E. coli) & fungal (C. albicans, M. canis ,T.rubrum & A. niger) pathogens.
